Surrealist Giants: Picasso & Dalí

As the flagship summer exhibition of Shanxi Museum, this special exhibition breaks geographical boundaries, bringing authentic works by 23 renowned Spanish artists including Picasso and Dalí to the banks of the Fenhe River. Curated by a professional team of international artists, all exhibits are official collections of the New York Art Association. Core works such as The Woman with Blue Eyes and Venus de Milo with Giraffe Neck have never been publicly displayed in China, delivering an unprecedented surrealist artistic impact to the land of Sanjin (Shanxi Province). On the opening day, Professor Shao Yiyang from the Central Academy of Fine Arts gave a keynote lecture titled "Bright Stars: The Painting Art of Spain", offering an in-depth interpretation of the code of artistic innovation. A winding queue formed outside the exhibition hall, with visitors waiting to enter despite the summer heat. One visitor commented emotionally: "Printed works are like specimens; only authentic works have a heartbeat. It's truly shocking to see Picasso's original works in Taiyuan!" This popularity persisted throughout the exhibition period, becoming an annual cultural phenomenon.

Centered on "Modern and Contemporary Spanish Art", the exhibition systematically presents the trajectory of artistic evolution through four sections: "Instant Impressions", "Inspiration of Beauty", "Form and Its Form", and "Dream and Reality". Covering diverse forms such as oil painting, sculpture, ceramics, and mixed media, each work contains innovative artistic ideas that subvert tradition. The Picasso exhibition area is undoubtedly the highlight:The Woman with Blue Eyes, created during his mature artistic period, depicts his lover Marie's grace and tenderness with striking blue eyes, and the smooth curves fully reflect the characteristics of the "Blonde Muse"; Nude with Raised Arms endows the human body with free power through exaggerated and distorted lines, bearing the exclusive stamp of Picasso's granddaughter; the ceramic work Yanbabu infuses the spirit of avant-garde painting into ancient ceramic art, with red pottery texture matched with black underglaze color, bold and expressive. Dalí's works are equally stunning: the bronze sculptureVenus de Milo with Giraffe Neck combines ancient Greek sculpture with a giraffe's long neck, with hidden subconscious metaphors in the drawers on the chest; the porcelain plate Son of Destiny takes cobalt blue as the background, with golden lines outlining a galloping horseman, fully demonstrating a surreal dreamlike feeling. In addition, impressionist masterpieces by Joaquín Sorolla and works such as The Bullfighter by José Gallego together depict the passion and deep affection of Spanish art. The exhibition breaks through traditional display modes, creating an immersive experience space through "art + new media + installations". In the immersive hall, electronic screens distort visitors' figures into Dalí-style soft clocks, and the flowing fluorescent fish shoals on the ground form a wonderful interaction with the exhibits. The laughter of children chasing light and shadow contrasts delightfully with the avant-garde temperament of Picasso's ceramic works.

A variety of supporting educational activities are available, including online and offline lectures and art workshops, allowing visitors to deeply understand the creative concept of surrealism. Visitors need to make real-name reservations online: first book a ticket for the main hall of Shanxi Museum, then purchase a special exhibition ticket to enter. The cultural and creative area is also popular. Peripherals such as canvas bags printed with The Woman with Blue Eyes, Dalí's melting clock badges, and reproduced notebooks of Picasso's manuscripts have become carriers for visitors to cherish their memories. As the exhibition curator said: "We hope to let the artistic heat wave of the Mediterranean collide with the cultural heritage of the Loess Plateau, allowing visitors to feel the infinite possibilities of art breaking boundaries through interaction." This intercontinental artistic dialogue not only allows Shanxi visitors to encounter masterpieces without traveling far, but also injects modern vitality into traditional museums through the bold innovation of surrealism, becoming a successful practice in cultural communication and art popularization.
