China-Italy 55th Diplomatic Anniversary: Art Exhibition

Weaving the threads of civilizations through "parallel narratives", the exhibition brings together over 200 masterpieces by more than 100 renowned Chinese calligraphers, painters and inheritors of intangible cultural heritage (ICH), which shine in harmony with the precious collections of the National Museum of Italian Civilizations. The Chinese section boasts brilliant highlights: Created in 1947 by Chang Shana, professor at the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University, Avalokiteshvara with Eight Arms and Eleven Faces fully embodies the solemn tranquility of Dunhuang art; Fan Zeng’s Portrait of Master Hongyi integrates calligraphic brushwork into its lines, boasting a refined and fluid style; the 7-meter-long Yuxian Paper-Cutting workFive Oxen stuns audiences with its hair-thin cutting craftsmanship, and Pu’s Egg Carving piece Spring Scenery South of the Yangtze River features micron-scale scenes carved on emu eggshells, whose translucent beauty can only be appreciated through a magnifying glass. Traditional crafts such as Cloisonné, Yunjin Brocade and Jade Carving convey oriental aesthetics through exquisite techniques. Pottery, bronze artifacts and traditional costumes on display in the Italian section demonstrate the profound craftsmanship rooted in Mediterranean civilization. When the glaze colors of Cloisonné meet the light and shadow of Italian ceramics, and the hollow-out design of paper-cutting echoes the arches of Roman architecture, the two countries’ arts achieve in-depth resonance in their pursuit of exquisite material application and composition.

Beyond being an art showcase, the exhibition serves as a dynamic platform for interaction and exchange. Five Chinese ICH inheritors gave on-site demonstrations; Italian guests joined in the color-inlay of the Cloisonné plate Harmony and Double Blessings, depicting "harmonious coexistence" with Chinese peonies and Italian daisies; the Yuxian Paper-Cutting work Colosseum pays tribute to the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Italy with 55 flying doves surrounding the historic site, striking a strong emotional chord. Italian visitor Luigi commented, "Though I cannot understand Chinese characters, I feel human dignity and nobility from the calligraphy and paintings. Such artistic expression is truly unique." The exhibition also fostered tangible cooperation: the director of the Hendrik Christian Andersen Museum in Italy extended an invitation for an ICH exhibition, and Italian artist Lelario reached a consensus on a dual-artist exhibition with an artist from the China National Academy of Painting.

More than 50 major Italian media outlets extensively covered the exhibition, spreading the beauty of oriental craftsmanship and the concept of inter-civilizational learning to a wider audience. As Shen Haixiong, president of China Media Group, put it, "Art is a bond connecting hearts, and even more a bridge linking the past and the present, and connecting the East and the West." This exhibition, transcending geographical boundaries, has further deepened the friendship between China and Italy amid the shared radiance of art.
